5 Reasons to Mobilize Your Tools

Have you been setting up your first shop and need to figure out how to organize it? Did you recently buy a machine that takes up a little too much space? Sounds like it’s time to make your tools mobile! If you’re unsure why you might need a mobile base in your shop, here are five good reasons.

1. Easily reconfigure your shop for any project

Different projects need different amounts of time with different machines. If you’re assembling a tabletop, you need a different work surface and a larger amount of space than if you’re milling boards or sanding a charcuterie board. By mounting your machines on mobile bases, you can move the large you need into the center of your space and move what you don’t need out of the way.

2. Maximize the square footage of your shop

If you have limited space to build, you know that it can be difficult to create a good workflow. In small spaces, you often end up shuffling your tools and machines around to make the most of what little space you have. This is much easier when your machines are mounted on mobile bases—they glide around the shop quickly and effortlessly so you have a large area to work.

3. Clean up more easily

Woodshops are known for being messy places for a good reason — chips and dust are everywhere (even if you have a dust collection system), and spills from wood finish or epoxy happen occasionally. Having mobile machinery makes it easier to clean up since you can simply push your machine out of the way with little to no effort. This is especially helpful if you’re in the middle of mopping up a spill.

4. Increase shop safety

Back pain is a common problem many people deal with, and pushing and pulling a machine across a shop can just make the problem worse. Mounting it on a mobile base gives you the freedom to set up your shop however you need so you can use any machine anywhere in the shop, pain-free.

5. Save time and increase overall productivity

Being able to move machines and tools around with little to no effort can save you a ton of time and productivity. It may not seem like a lot per project, but when you consider what it takes to move a machine like a table saw, you’ll appreciate the reduced stress as well as the minutes you get back in your day. Who knows? When you have lots of responsibilities pulling you in many different directions, an extra 10 minutes can be a godsend.
