Mobilizing your woodworking machines basically comes down to three steps: buy the mobile base, assemble it, and then mount your machine on it. Seems simple enough, right?
The assembly stage, which we’ll cover here, can be divided into four steps. Your instruction manual will certainly come with directions, but before you buy, it’s always nice to know that it’s not complicated to assemble. In fact, most BORA® mobile bases can be put together in about 30 minutes!
Step 1: Lay out your frame
First things first: clear a space for assembly so you can lay out all your pieces and tools. Open the box and unpack all the pieces of your new mobile base, laying them out so you can check that all the parts are there. You can do this on your workbench or on the ground — whichever is easier for you.
Step 2: Measure your rails
The next thing you’ll want to do is measure the footprint of the machine or other item that you’re mobilizing. Once you have that measurement, add about an inch to those dimensions. This allows clearance for the fastening bolts that attach your rails together. With your new dimensions in mind, you can measure out the length of your rails so they are the proper length.
Step 3: Bolt your mobile base together
Now that you know how long you need your rails to be, you can go ahead and bolt them together. The rails will have holes drilled at one-inch increments, so just pick the holes that give you the closest measurement and bolt them there. You’ll take your assembled rails and attach them to the corners at this point so that you have a completed frame.
Step 4: Attach the wheels
Finally — it’s time to attach the wheels and make this mobile base mobile! The wheels have several parts to them, and you’ll start by assembling the brackets that connect the wheels to the base. Once these are complete and attached to the rails, bolt each wheel into its respective bracket.
With that, you’re ready to mount your machine on your mobile base!
